KYOTO WITHOUT CROWDS

There's a stifling consensus that develops around major tourist cities. We know in advance the 20 things not to miss, the top 10 must-see items, the 48-hour round-up of essential sights. And that's as far as many tourists get. The mainstream guidebooks shepherd us round the same highlights, leaving everything else in friendly shade. Kyoto obeys the usual rules: a handful of spectacular sites account for the vast majority of tourists. And yet a five-minute walk could often take the same tourists into a quite different Kyoto whose temples and gardens offer a startling contrast to the crowded pathways of their more celebrated neighbours. It's this city that's the subject of Kyoto Without Crowds.
